Back in October 2018, Taka, an adorable eight-year-old Shiba Inu, went through a life-altering experience. Sadly, a harmful house fire left him with serious burns, and his journey to recovery was tough. Thanks to the tireless efforts of caring veterinary staff and selfless volunteer doctors, Taka received the necessary care and affection to heal. Fast forward to today, as he marks his fifth birthday, Taka is giving back by devoting his days to aiding and comforting those who have also suffered from burns.
A Healing Journey
Taka suffered severe burns in a tragic accident, leading to extensive medical treatment. He was taken to Care Extra Animal Hospital in Martinez, Georgia, where he underwent months of rehabilitation. The dedicated veterinary staff at the hospital worked tirelessly to treat his injuries and provide the love and care he needed to heal. Additionally, doctors from the Joseph M. Still Burn Center volunteered their time to assist in Taka’s recovery process.
Finding a Permanent Home
In January, after receiving months of specialized care, Taka was welcomed into his forever home by Crystal Lesley, a veterinary technician at Care Extra Animal Hospital. Lesley, who had developed a strong bond with Taka during his rehabilitation, knew that he belonged with her. “He’s mine, and I just feel like he was meant to be mine. I can’t explain it,” Lesley shared.
From Survivor to Therapy Pooch
After receiving immense support from caring animal enthusiasts, Taka is now preparing to give back. He is undergoing training to become a therapy dog at a burn center, offering the same kindness he received during his own recovery. Taka’s scars showcase his resilience, and his presence brings solace and optimism to burn victims facing similar struggles.
Taka is receiving training from Dog Training Project, under the guidance of founder Mandy Foster. Despite his age, Taka has shown remarkable progress in his training. Foster mentioned, “Sometimes it might take a little longer, but in Taka’s case, at 9 years old, he has excelled in his training. He’s exceptional.”
Training and Certification
Taka is currently mastering basic commands, learning to handle distractions, and is working towards obtaining his American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Good Citizen certification. Once he accomplishes this milestone, he will begin the specialized training necessary to become a therapy dog. Taka’s transformation from burn victim to therapy dog is a testament to his strength and tenacity.
Celebrating Taka’s Fifth Birthday
As Taka marks his fifth birthday, his story continues to inspire many. His birthday is not just about celebrating his life but also recognizing his incredible journey from a severely injured dog to a beacon of hope and comfort for burn victims. His family plans to celebrate with a special dog-friendly cake, new toys, and a fun day at the park.
As Taka progresses on his path towards becoming a certified therapy dog, his story serves as a touching example of the positive impact that love, care, and compassion can have on animals. Looking ahead, Taka’s journey symbolizes hope and inspiration as he prepares to support others in their own therapeutic journeys. Happy fifth birthday, Taka! Your resilience and dedication are truly inspiring, and we are excited to witness the continued difference you will make in the lives of burn victims.
